Researchers at Harvard looked at a sequence of evidence:
- Gut flora transplanted from anxious patients into mice increased anxiety behavior in mice.
- The Nurses Health Study correlated decreased incidence of depression with patients with one specific gut bacterium: F. prau
- Citrus consumption among nurses studied tends to be associated with higher populations of F. prau in their gut bacteria
- The data is preliminary but intriguing
