Religious Scholars Met With Anthropic. What They Heard Stunned Them. (NYtimes)

What does it mean that Dr. Olah, co-founder at Anthropic, met with Pope Leo to talk about morality and AI?

I am not an ethics expert, or an expert on Christianity or Buddhism. I’m an OG CMIO and can glimpse into the far fields of human striving, the better angels of our nature, and the temptations we experience. I also know something about information technology and the human-computer interface.

But this.

The question of consciousness, of morality, of the mental health of AI models? Befuddlement.

I do not know. This both terrifies and excites me. Who knew that, out of pure math and compute power, we would have to wrestle with these questions, as LLM’s gain fluency and insight?

I, for one, have come to rely on Claude for tracking invoices and my business, being my executive assistant, and hosting my personal Board of Advisors. I HAVE asked how we might work more efficiently together. Never have I asked it how it is doing, how its mental health is. Should I?

What is going on? How are YOU thinking about this?
