Great news for my unhappy colleagues. As a growing number of us have to deal with long passwords due to the increasing threat from external hackers trying to breach our electronic systems, there is a light on the horizon.

University of Colorado recently expanded the requirement for password length, which has had the downstream impact of a lot more typing for my clinical colleagues who have to use that password to login to our electronic health record, to prescribe controlled substances, as part of 2-factor authentication, and so on.

The struggle between efficiency and security goes on. Nobody wants a security breach and having systems locked up, or medical records stolen, or being unable to do our jobs as physicians. On the other hand, having to type long passwords many times a day is also a big impact to our effectiveness and efficiency.

What to do?

If you use a modern smartphone, you are likely familiar with passkeys based on biometrics on your smartphone: FaceID on iOS, or a fingerprint reader on a device you own, can communicate securely with a website or program.
