Elmo’s innocuous question (NYTimes)

What a sign of the times we live in.

Elmo, my favorite Sesame Street character from my childhood, asked a question on X, formerly Twitter:

“Elmo is just checking in! How is everybody doing?”

17,000 replies later, he realized he struck a nerve. and, much of it not positive in outlook.

In reply, Elmo’s followup tweet is spot on for his character, and also a message I want to echo to my colleagues on- and offline:

“Wow! Elmo is glad he asked! Elmo learned it is important to ask a friend how they are doing.”

Thanks, Elmo. Let’s check in with each other more often.
