The Importance of Epic Sprints and other grand gestures (CT Lin on the Medicine Cabinet podcast)

Dr. Liz Harry and I have a chat about using informatics to implement “grand gestures” and “blowing up” existing habits/systems to return joy to the workplace.

Blog friends: this podcast is on Spotify, so perhaps you could listen on a walk. Dr. Liz Harry and I discuss our UCHealth physician/APP informatics group work, including Epic Sprints to reduce the EHR burden, inbasket redesign to improve teamwork, and other “grand gestures” where front line clinicians and staff can “feel” the improvements we are making to make their lives better:

  • Eliminating 7 million typed passwords a year for ordering prescriptions
  • Deleting / expiring 11 million messages that are older than 6 months old
  • Slashing our BPA (best practice alerts) based on high-override rates to stop interrupting clinicians caring for patients
  • And more

We are all fighting the same battles: improve care, reduce the burden and burnout, return joy to the workplace. Pull together! Do you have initiatives that are working for you? Let me know!
